JUNE 9
1863 – Battle of Brandy Station;
…aka the Battle of Fleetwood Hill. Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasanton v Confederate Maj. Gen. JEB Stuart. The result? Confederate tactical victory; but also a big morale boost for the Union army after fighting to a stalemate.
This was the largest cavalry battle in the history of America. About 10,000 of Jeb’s Stuart’s men under order from Gen. Lee after the outbreak of the Gettysburg Campaign were in Culpepper VA. Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker got wind of Gen. Lee’s movements up north from Culpepper to the Shenandoah Valley.
But Pleasanton anticipated this move, and at 4:30 in the morning, crossing the Rappahannock River, the element of surprise was used against Stuart’s camp at Brandy Station. Mounted horsemen charged each other, pretty much until nightfall.
While Stuart was able to hold off the initial attack, there was another unit nearby at Kelley’s Ford on its way. By the end of the day, there were 1400 total casualties. Jeb Stuart’s handling of the situation would become under heavy inquiry, his vanity allegedly getting in the way of his better judgment, and would tarnish his reputation. The Union army, on the other hand, would enjoy this as a moral victory.
This was only the beginning of the Gettysburg Campaign.
1993 – Hollywood Madam is arrested,
…and it took the US Justice Dept, the Los Angeles and Beverly Hills police departments to take down Heidi Fleiss. She became Hollywood’s top prostitution service producer in the 1980s.
As she rose to fame, she fell into a sting operation with three clients, which were undercover po’po. So when she went to trial, America understandably wanted to know who in Hollywood her clients were. Besides Charlie Sheen. She pleaded not guilty but was found guilty in December 1994 of three out of five pandering accounts, and not guilty for the cocaine they busted her with. She was sentenced three years in prison and a 1500 fine. But then.
Heidi Fleiss went up against a federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy, money laundering and tax evasion. In August 1995 she was convicted on eight of 14 counts and was sentenced to 37 months. She basically served three years, and later started dating Tom Sizemore, who was in Heat, Saving Private Ryan, and Blackhawk Down.
That didn’t go over well as she filed charges for abuse charges on him, and he got six months but only served 90 days. Plus probation and counseling. Heidi Fleiss these days supposedly owns a Laundromat in Nevada called Dirty Laundry, and is looking to open a brothel catering to female customers.
1901 – NY Giants get record 31 hits
…to beat the Cincy Reds 25-13

1856 – 497 Mormons leave Iowa to Salk Lake City,
…on foot, carrying 500 pound handcarts. Young had designated Salt Lake City as the center for the Church of latter days saints, and many pioneers made their way.
A group in Iowa didn’t have the money for wagons and oxen so used handcarts that contained all their belongings. And walked. Over 1,000 miles. In rough terrain. The handcarts had a wooden axle instead of iron, and the handcarts eventually lost their wheels, and had to drag their carts with them. 500 pounds, folks.
Two of the Mormons gave up, two girls found some miners on the way and left the group, but other than that the rest made their trek, pushing and pulling creaking wooden handcarts the whole way.
1961/1963 Happy birthdays Michael J. Fox and Johnny Depp.
