1779 – Benedict Arnold court-martial proceeding begin.

…And was delayed until December 1779 due to the nature of the Revolution at that time. After a fairly accomplished record in the early days of the Revolution, Arnold was charged with 13 counts of misbehavior, including misusing government wagons and illegally buying and selling goods. Although his notorious betrayal was still a long ways away, Arnold’s resentment over this order and the perceived mistreatment by the American Army would fuel his decision to turn his back on America.

Though Arnold would be cleared of most charges, General Washing said some not very nice things about Arnold on April 6 of the following year, and this really set off Arnold. He thought that he had never been properly rewarded or acknowledge for his military success on their behalf, and he did have several.

He started talking with British spies about the possibility of defecting and handing over West Point to the British; The British, who already had control of New York City and believed that by taking West Point they could effectively cut off the American’s New England forces from the rest of the fledgling nation.

In August, 1780 he officially defected, taking a huge bribe from Sir Henry Clinton for West Point. The plan fell through however when British officer John Andre, acting as a messenger, was robbed by AWAL Americans working as pirates in the woods north of New York City. The notes revealing Arnold’s traitorous agreement were stashed in his boots.

To this day Benedict Arnold’s name is synonymous with the word traitor. He died in 1801, and was buried in England without military honors.

1862 – The ending of the Battle of Fair Oaks/7 Pines.
…Yesterday I went into some detail about this and now that the smoke had cleared there were 11,165 casualties, and General Robert E. Lee assumes command after Joe Johnston is injured.

1801 – Happy birthday the American Moses.

…Brigham Young was an American leader in the Latter Day Saint movement and a settler of the Western US. He was President of The of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from 1847 until his death in 1877. He founded Salt Lake City and served as first governor of the Utah Territory. Young also led the foundings of the precursors to the University of Utah and Brigham Young University.

1926—Happy birthday Marilyn Monroe.
Some not-so-common facts about America’s favorite pin up girl include the fact that she roomed with Shelley Winters during her early Hollywood days. Marilyn also went through psychoanalysis. She was listening to a Frank Sinatra album when she died, allegedly. She studied literature at UCLA, and owned over 400 books, by Dostoevsky, Salinger, Shaw, Wolfe, Tolstoy, Whiteman, Milton, Keats, Twain, and Joyce.

Marilyn Monroe was also Truman Capote’s original choice for the part of Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She was voted Miss California Artichoke Queen of 1947, whatever the hell that is. She treasured her autographed picture of Albert Einstein, which he inscribed, “To Marilyn, with respect and love and thanks.”

She was a fan of Mozart, Beethoven and Louis Armstrong, had a childhood dog named Tippy, the same name in her unfinished final film Something’s Got to Give in 1962, and considered Goya, El Greco, Picasso, Michelangelo, and Botticelli her favorite painters.

1935 — Mapparium opens in Boston.

It’s kinda like looking at the world from the inside out! Imagine a large; three story round room with a bridge that could show you the world. Politically, the maps would change, with country boundary lines in 1939 becoming quite different in 1958, and again in 1966. Think about it!

Thanks to Boston archeologist Chester Lindsay Churchill, who was inspired by the Christian Science Publishing and Monitor’s buildings, along with the spinning globe in the New York Daily News building, we can now see a giant stained glass 608 panoramic panel view inside the Mary Baker Eddy Library.

Since its opening in 1935 the Mapparium has had over 10M visitors.

2016 – Ellen gets paid.

TV megastar Ellen DeGeneres breaks the record for being the highest female TV show host heretofore. Thanks to her eponymous show, her Netflix stand up, her digital company called Ellen Digital Ventures, featuring streams of toddlers and YouTube stars, multi-million dollar business thanks to sponsored shows on proprietary streaming platform Ellentube and various mobile games including hit Heads Up. This girl’s got personality.

Lots of great quotes. Sometimes you can’t see yourself clearly until you see yourself through the eyes of others. Well played, Ellen, great point. But my favorite quote from Ellen is probably “Procrastinate now, don’t put it off.”

1989 – Happy divorciversary
to Robin Givens & Mike Tyson, and another one 1991 to Roseanne & Tom Arnold.
