NOVEMBER 4 — 1796 Treaty of Tripoli signed with United States; 2006 Rob Dyrdek gets his first MTV show

NOVEMBER 4

1796  — Treaty of Tripoli is signed with the United States.

Former president Barak Obama once stated Islam was been woven into the fabric of our country since its forming. I’m not really sure whathemeans by that, I’m guessing he’s referring to the fact that most of the slaves from Africa sent to America who broke their backs to build American infrastructure were Muslim, though many would be forced to Christianity.

Whatever it is it had nothing to do with this treaty. If Obama meant America has been at war against Islam since the beginning, I suppose he would have a point there as well.

When the United States of America broke away from Great Britain on July 4, 1776m, part of that split included British protection. Of course the American settlers could fight the Native Americans on their own without help from the British, so that was a nonfactor. Except for near in the seas near the Gibraltar trait. Pirates in the Barbary States, in the areas we now call Libya, Tunisia and Algeria, relentlessly attacked all European vessels in the area and enslaved hundreds of thousands, possibly over a million crew members were enslaved, and white women in particular held a high ransom value that was downright extortion.

The ransom continued to grow, and by the year 1800 captured American vessels were seeking a demand of roughly 20% of the entire U.S. economy.  Fast forward for a moment all the way up to 2019, when Rashida Tlaib wanted to swear her oath of office as she was sworn in as Congresswoman in Michigan on the copy of the Quran that was previously owned by Thomas Jefferson.

You see, when the British destroyed Washington DC during the War of 1812, Jefferson donated his personal library tor emplace the Library. Among this very large collection included a copy of the Quran, which  Tllaib chose to be sworn in with because “A lot of Americans just have this kind of feeling that Islam is somehow foreign to American history.” Yet, I highly doubt that was the reason Jefferson had a copy of the Quran.

When he demanded an answer from Tripoli Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman in London as to why the pirates are getting away with this he was told the same thing his predecessor John Adams was told that the rights were founded on the Law of the Prophet, that it was written in the Koran, that all nations who have not answered their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found and blah blah blah. Then the U.S. Navy and Marines put a stop to it.

Yes, the same Navy that was created during the American Revolution would now be put to work on its first internationanal war, and it was a quick one. The 1805 Battle of Dema was kicked off the Barbary Wars, which was won by the alliance of America and Sweden, quickly won by Army Lt. William Eaton  and Marine 1st Lt. Presley Neveille O’Bannon.

I’ve had parties that lasted longer than this battle. Chances are you’ve been to one. Chances are, Jefferson had that Quran in his collection because he was trying to understand an entity that was not compatible with America’s democratic and republic values.

1979 – The Iran hostage crisis
begins. Apparently angry after three decades of what they considered CIA meddling, Iranian students supportive of Muslim cleric Ayatollah Khomeini stormed the .S. Embassy in Tehran and took 52 American’s hostage. Khomeini, who supported the embassy takeover, had just overthrown Mohammed Reza shah Pahlavi, who evacuated to Egypt in January 1979 and months later was receiving treatment for cancer in Mexico. It was suggested that the Shah be taken to the US for better treatment. Tehran warned Washington several times by cable that if the Shah would be released to the US for treatment the embassy would be taken, according to CNN. President Carter ignored this advice and let the Shah come to America. Carter ordered a complete embargo of Iranian oil, and since all that did was worsens an ongoing energy crisis in America, carter tried to forcefully get the hostages out in a failed rescue attempt that killed eight Americans. For 444 days several of the 52 Americans were tortured, beaten, and were the subject of mock executions.

The captors would wake them up in the middle of the night, strip them down to their underwear, blindfold them and walk them into a basement and have them line up. Then the captors would shoot blanks at them. Just for fun, I suppose. So unbelievably ineffective was the way in which President carter handled the situation that when Ronald Reagan replaced him as president, literally within an hour the hostages were released.

These days some of them still suffer nightmares and injustice, as the US State Department dismissed a lawsuit from them, stating it would interfere with current diplomatic relations with Rian. Meanwhile, the former embassy is now a museum and an Islamic cultural center. According to CNN, “preserved from the days when it was a prison in 1979. It stands as a symbol of the Iranian revolution, and is known in Iran as the “den of spies.” Old typewriters, communication equipment, even old visa photos, are on display. Every year on the anniversary of the hostage taking, Iranians hold rallies where “Death to America” is chanted, just as it was in 1979.”

1846—Benjamin Palmer from New Hampshire invents he artificial leg. You’re welcome, world. Oscar Pistorius would use two of those things in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Too bad he killed his girlfriend, he might be a hero. Injured military personnel are able to get some of their lives back thanks to this invention by Palmer in 1846.

1843 – Dentist John Beers of San Francisco patents the gold crown, and no you won’t be able to pick up radio stations with one in your grill. That was already debunked in Mythbusters. Sorry. 1879 James Ritty of Ohio patents the cash register. Why? Because he was a saloon keeper and didn’t want to get ripped off. Oh yeah, and because he’s a great American. That’s why.

2001 – Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Bomber. For only the third time in World Series history, the home team won all of their games, until tonight. With only two outs away from their fourth consecutive championship, the New York Yankees just barely had the game taken away by a team that was from a state that was younger than the Yankees. Truly an epic game.

2006 – Rob Dyrdek and his bodyguard show up on his first MTV show.

Why is that a surprise that Rob would get his own show? It’s not. Rob lived his boyhood as a great American hustler, why not his adult live as well?

Born June 28 1974, Rob was born in Kettering, OH. He got His first professional skateboard from his hero Neil Blender.  An appropriate name for a shredder!  Young Rob had signed up for a skateboarding contest as a child at a local competition. He earned that skateboard through heart and sweat. Rob was athletic, purchased a skateboard from the loose change his sister’s boyfriend was able to scrounge up for him, but he couldn’t afford to actually enter the competition. So Rob went to the event organizers and said, Check this out. I can’t afford this competition, but if I can get ten other skaters to join the competition, can I get in for free? The judges went for it, and young Rob found ten other skaters to join the competition, and from there he killed it.

He said to himself he was going to be the best, and at the age of eleven, Rob Dyrdek made his name known in front of his skateboarding heroes. He would sit in class and daydream about how he would do tricks. This isn’t an excuses to daydream in class folks, I’m talking about a kid who framed in his mind the actions his body would follow, and that became a reality for him. That’s a huge part of success.  At the time he was just doing his thing without realizing he was coming up with his own style and by extension, his name brand. Before he was 17, Rob and Neil created their own brand together, Alien Workshop.  By the time he was a senior in high school; Rob had become competitive enough to ride professionally, and dropped out of his senior year to move to Southern California.  Rob was an entrepreneur, and he got sponsored by DC shoes right away.

From there Rob’s career took off. One might argue that it wasn’t his natural born ability to skate; it was his sheer belief in him when he not only competed but hustled his way into endorsements.  Rob had some failures and learned from them all.   He learned a few tricks about marketing products from his friend Bam Margera from Jackass, so Rob renegotiated all his licensing deals for super high royalties and way low minimums, as he called it.  But it on this day in 04 when Rob hit the bigtime with Rob and Big. Now, you’re either a fan of Rob’s or you aren’t. Those of you who are saw him on another hit show Reduculousness as well as Dude Perfect on CMT, and others, and probably are familiar with all the skating records he’s broken including the longest 50 50 rail grind,  longest board slide, highest jump ramp into water, and many others.  Whether you’re a skateboarder or not, we can all learn a lot from this gutsy American self-made kid.
